What Is Elevated Chiropractic? Why We Treat More Than Where It Hurts

When most people hear the word chiropractic, they think of one thing: an adjustment.

We love chiropractic adjustments. They can be an incredibly valuable part of musculoskeletal care.

But at The Body Theory, we believe chiropractic can be more.

More individualized. More movement-focused. More collaborative. More intentional.

Because when someone walks into our office with pain, our first question isn't simply:

“Where should we adjust?”

It's:

“What do you need your body to be able to do?”

That question changes everything.

Pain Is Part of the Story—Not the Whole Story

Pain is often what brings someone into our office, but it rarely tells us everything we need to know.

Two people can walk in with pain in exactly the same location and need completely different approaches to care.

A high school athlete may have knee pain every time she cuts or changes direction on the field. A dad may have knee pain when he squats down to play with his kids. A runner may feel it at mile three. Someone else may simply want to walk up the stairs without thinking about their knee.

The location may be the same.

The person isn't.

Their history is different. Their movement is different. Their physical demands are different. And most importantly, what they need their body to do is different.

That's why we don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.

We Start With an Assessment, Not an Adjustment

Before deciding how we're going to treat something, we want to understand it.

That begins with listening.

What happened? What makes it worse? What makes it better? Has it happened before? What have you already tried? What activities are you avoiding? What are you worried about? And where do you want to get back to?

From there, your examination may include orthopedic testing, neurological testing, joint mobility, strength, range of motion, movement assessment and functional testing depending on your presentation.

And sometimes we want to see the actual thing you're struggling with.

Show us your squat.

Show us what happens when you run, hinge, reach overhead, balance on one leg, throw, jump, lift or perform the movement that isn't going the way you want it to.

Because ultimately, we're not treating a body part in isolation.

We're treating a person who wants to do something.

The Adjustment Is a Tool—Not the Entire Treatment Plan

Chiropractic manipulation and mobilization are important tools in our clinical toolbox.

But they're not the only ones.

Depending on your examination findings, goals and preferences, your treatment plan at The Body Theory may incorporate chiropractic adjustments, extremity care, soft-tissue treatment, dry needling, chiropractic acupuncture, movement assessment, rehabilitation, progressive loading or other appropriate treatment strategies.

Sometimes an adjustment makes sense.

Sometimes another approach makes more sense.

Often, it's a combination.

The modality isn't the treatment plan. The patient is.

The Treatment Table Isn't the Finish Line

This is one of the biggest ideas behind what we call Elevated Chiropractic.

Hands-on treatment can be incredibly valuable. Helping someone decrease symptoms and move more comfortably matters.

But we don't want the only measure of success to be:

“I feel better when I leave the office.”

We also want to know:

What happens when you go back to your life?

Can you load it?

Can you control it?

Can you tolerate the demands of your sport, job or workout?

Can you do the thing that brought you here in the first place?

That's where rehabilitation becomes such an important part of our approach.

When appropriate, we'll work on the specific qualities your body needs—whether that's mobility, motor control, coordination, strength, endurance, balance, tendon capacity, power or progressive loading.

Because there's an important difference between feeling better and being physically prepared to do more.

Performance Is Personal

You don't have to be a professional athlete to care about how your body performs.

At The Body Theory, performance is personal.

For one person, performance means stepping onto a powerlifting platform and hitting a new PR.

For another, it's finishing their first 5K.

It might mean playing an entire pickleball match, returning to a CrossFit class, making it through football season, training throughout pregnancy, getting back to the gym three days a week or picking up your child without hesitating.

For someone else, performance might simply mean walking, gardening, traveling or keeping up with their grandchildren.

There is no universal definition.

We care about what your body needs to do for the life you want to live.

That's why you'll find competitive athletes and everyday active people in our office—and why both deserve the same thoughtful approach to their care.

We Treat More Than the Spine

Another misconception about chiropractic?

That everything has to be about the back or neck.

Our doctors evaluate and treat musculoskeletal complaints involving both the spine and extremities.

That can include the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle and foot in addition to the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine.

For an athlete, that may mean evaluating an Achilles issue affecting running.

For a lifter, it may be a shoulder that isn't tolerating pressing.

For a parent, it might be a hip that's making everyday activity uncomfortable.

The goal isn't to find somewhere to adjust.

The goal is to understand the problem and determine the most appropriate next step.

Sometimes the Right Treatment Isn't Chiropractic Treatment

Elevated care also means knowing our role.

Not every patient who walks into our office should be treated in our office.

Your history and examination may indicate that imaging is appropriate. Your symptoms may warrant medical evaluation. You may need another healthcare professional involved in your care.

And sometimes the best approach is co-management.

We value relationships with physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, coaches, strength professionals and other members of a patient's healthcare and performance team.

Great healthcare shouldn't be a competition over who gets to “own” the patient.

It should be about getting the patient where they need to go.

We Want You Back Doing the Thing

Ultimately, that's what all of this comes back to.

We don't want you dependent on our treatment table.

We want to help you understand your body, build confidence in it and progressively return to the things that make your life yours.

Back to the field.

Back under the barbell.

Back to running.

Back to your workout.

Back to picking up your kids.

Back to feeling like yourself.

Because pain relief can be an important first step.

But it doesn't always have to be the finish line.

This Is Chiropractic. Elevated.

At The Body Theory, we believe great musculoskeletal care should be individualized, clinically driven, movement-based and built around the person in front of us.

Whether you're a competitive athlete, weekend warrior, active parent, pregnant or postpartum athlete, or simply someone who wants to keep moving and doing the things you love, our approach starts with understanding you.

Where are you now?

Where do you want to go?

And what does your body need to help you get there?

That's Elevated Chiropractic.

MOVE BETTER. BUILD RESILIENCE. GET BACK TO WHAT YOU LOVE.
